A Summer Explorers Adventure
Some places feel too grand to fit inside Indiana — and yet here they are, tucked right into our state’s rolling hills. The West Baden Springs Hotel, often called the Eighth Wonder of the World, is one of them.

This wasn’t my first trip to West Baden, but it was the first time I brought my kids along. Thanks to the Summer Explorers Program through the Lilly Scholars Network, I finally got to share this historic wonder with my family — and seeing it through their eyes was unforgettable.

Why This Made My TravelGoals List
For years, I’ve loved the charm and history of West Baden Springs Hotel. But bringing my kids turned this visit into something entirely new. Their wide-eyed awe under the dome, curiosity about the old photos of the hotel in ruins, and delight in discovering the library reminded me that this place isn’t just about history. It’s about legacy — passing Indiana’s magic down to the next generation.

What Makes This Place Special
1.) The Dome That Defied Gravity
At over 200 feet across, the free-spanning dome was the largest of its kind when it opened in 1902. Designed by architect Harrison Albright, it was so daring that people called it the Eighth Wonder of the World. Standing beneath it with my kids, I couldn’t help but agree — it feels like stepping into a cathedral built for the sky. Learn more: West Baden Springs Hotel

2.) The Mineral Springs Legacy
Before luxury rooms and golf courses, West Baden drew travelers for its so-called “miracle waters.” Mineral springs like Pluto and Sprudel were believed to heal and restore. While the waters aren’t bottled anymore, you can still experience wellness through the resort’s modern spa. Relax here: French Lick Resort Spa
3.) Fire, Decay, and Rebirth
The hotel’s story is one of survival. A fire destroyed the original wooden building in 1901, but within a year, it was rebuilt — this time with the iconic dome. Later, decades of decline nearly erased it from Indiana’s map. Photos of its ruins are haunting, but thanks to Indiana Landmarks, it was saved and restored to glory. Today, it’s living proof of Indiana's resilience.

4.) Sinclair’s Legacy Dining
Named for Lee Sinclair, the visionary who transformed West Baden into the marvel it became, Sinclair’s Restaurant carries on the tradition of elegance. Between the plush red velvet chairs and the grand fireplace, you can almost imagine yourself dining alongside the hotel’s earliest guests.
5.) Gardens & Verandas
Sometimes, the wonder is found in the quietest corners. The restored sunken garden is picture-perfect, while the grand veranda offers rocking chairs that beg you to sit and stay awhile. Morning coffee with the garden view might just be my personal definition of peace.

6.) Heritage & Entertainment
Luxury has always been part of West Baden’s DNA. Shops like West Baden Mercantile Co., Siebert’s Jewelry, and Mitchell’s Jewelry keep that legacy alive today. My kids loved exploring the library, which feels like a secret nook in a castle. Whether you’re browsing, reading, or just people-watching, there’s magic in every corner.
7.) Modern Indulgence
History meets modern charm here. I couldn’t resist ice cream at Xanadu Coffee & Creamery — especially their signature “West Baden Dome” flavor. Add in the hotel’s world-class spa and legendary golf courses designed by Donald Ross and Pete Dye, and you’ve got a destination that blends past and present perfectly. 8.) A Living Wonder Today
The real magic of West Baden isn’t in its past, but in the moments still being created. Watching my kids play chess in the atrium, wander through the library, and discover their own favorite spots reminded me that this hotel is more than a museum. It’s a living wonder, still inspiring awe more than a century after its dome first opened.
