Logical Discipline: A Restorative and Social-Emotional Approach for Educators

Brad Weinstein,

the co-author of the international bestseller Hacking School Discipline, developed Logical Discipline from his experience as an educator and his time working with schools worldwide. He realized that no single approach meets the needs of all students and that siloed initiatives in schools can cause fragmentation and frustration. Logical Discipline makes discipline more effective through synthesizing research-based discipline processes from elements of:

  • PBIS
  • Equitable Practices
  • Restorative Practices
  • Applied Neuroscience
  • Social-emotional Learning
  • Trauma-informed Practices

Discipline must be logical.

In other words, educators must use the most effective and impactful strategies possible that work towards lasting change. Logical Discipline proactively helps educators build connections and community, which can foster an increase of belonging and reduce conflict. It also uses brain-aligned strategies that hold students accountable for their actions using restorative, logical, and natural consequences.

Schools often label behaviors as classroom-managed or office-managed. However, they do not always utilize the systems, skills, or tools to help students work with these behaviors. This can cause frustration and a lack of consistency. We help educators and schools build and sustain healthy learning environments where all students can thrive. I loved doing the circle. The intervention progression chart is something I will use/create with my staff.

I loved the chart of progressive interventions. I can see my staff developing something like this together for some of the most frequent areas of discipline.

System and Process Development

Schools need effective strategies to align with sustainable systems in order to maximize success. This takes precision, teamwork, and collaboration with experts in the field. We work with schools to co-construct and design logical systems. Some of the components of this process are:

  • Baseline data collection
  • Competency pre-assessment survey
  • Data triangulation and reflection
  • Synthesizing initiatives
  • Procedure and policy alignment
  • Action plan development

Ongoing Support and Coaching

Systemic change takes buy-in, support, consistency, and accountability. We support schools through the entire change process and beyond to help enhance quality implementation and sustainability.

  • Check-ins throughout the school year
  • Problem-solving through difficulties and setbacks
  • Monitoring action plans
  • Reteaching and relearning opportunities
  • Custom support as needed
