In 2020-2021, Mathew was chosen as the Elementary School Principal of the Year by 72 fellow elementary school principals in Metro Nashville Public School. The school's work has been featured on National Public Radio, the local documentary Enough, PBS, and Edutopia, which resulted in over 7,000,000 views. He is the founder of the Trauma-Informed Educators Network social media group, which has connected over 30,000 educators in over 100 countries. As a result of the group, Portell started the Trauma-Informed Educators Network Podcast, which has been streamed nearly 150,000 times globally, by featuring top experts in the field, including Dr. Bruce Perry, Ingrid Cockhren, Dr. Mona Delahooke, Zaretta Hammond, and many more.

Portell is a sought-after keynote speaker that has presented at various conferences nationally and internationally, most notably the statewide Tennessee Child Advocacy Day in Nashville, TN, at the state capital; Attachment and Trauma Network Conference in Houston, TX; Towards Trauma-Informed Practices in Northampton, England; Hertfordshire School Conference in Hertfordshire, England, and in September 2022, Portell was featured in a speaking tour across New Zealand and Australia.

Portell continues to expand and support the trauma-informed paradigm shift by coaching and supporting schools across the country in a collaborative approach to creating a need and impactful change within and outside the school community.
